Singapore, 31 May 2025 — World leaders discussed regional security, defense strategies and other cooperation on the second day of the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue. The warning from the United States and the historic speech by the French President at the FPDA defense ministers’ meeting made the day significant.
Strong commitment from FPDA
The defense ministers of Australia, the United Kingdom, Malaysia and New Zealand, led by Singapore’s Defense Minister Chan Chun Sing, gathered in Pyeongchang. They pledged to strengthen the role of the Five Power Defense Arrangement (FPDA) in addressing modern security threats.
Global challenges at ministerial level
A roundtable discussion with representatives from 28 countries covered the climate crisis, cyber threats and geopolitical instability. Participants agreed that “Security is impossible without cooperation” and that multilateral partnerships are the only solution.
US strong message
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned of potential Chinese aggression. He said, “There is no compromise on Taiwan’s security” and that the US defense alliance with allies in the Indo-Pacific region will be further strengthened.
Macron’s call for peace
In his keynote speech, French President Emmanuel Macron stressed anti-war unity and a rules-based world order. He said, “Double standards must end—peace is the right of all.”
Bilateral and trilateral strategic meetings
Important decisions were taken on economic security and technological cooperation in various discussions, including the Japan-Australia-US trilateral meeting.

A dinner hosted by Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam brought together culture and diplomacy, as well as discussions.
