Cyber security has become an essential issue in today’s world. With the advancement of digital technology, cyber threats have also increased. In this context, the Singapore government has launched the Sentinel Program, which aims to prepare the younger generation for cyber defense.
Brief introduction to the Sentinel Program
The Ministry of Defence of Singapore (MINDEF) and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). They launched the Sentinel Program in January 2024. Through this program, students from secondary schools, junior colleges, polytechnics and ITEs are provided with the opportunity to acquire cybersecurity and digital skills. The program is designed for four years – two years for secondary students and two years for post-secondary students.
March 2025 is a busy and productive month
Entering the world of computer networks

In March 2025, Secondary 2 students participated in a two-day cybersecurity workshop at Singapore Polytechnic. In this workshop, they solved cybercrime case studies using tools like Wireshark.
First steps in Python programming
Year 5 students of Junior College participated in a workshop to gain basic concepts of Python programming. In this workshop, they worked in teams and received direct guidance from instructors.
Improving skills in Network Intrusion Detection Systems
Year 6 students participated in a special workshop to gain in-depth knowledge of Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS). In this workshop, they learned techniques to detect and prevent real-life cyber threats.
Special visit to DSO National Laboratories
As part of the Sentinel Programme, students participated in a special visit to DSO National Laboratories. During the visit, they learned about the work of Singapore’s largest defence research and development organisation and gained insight into the possibilities of building a career in cyber defence.
Sentinel Challenge 2024: A Test of Skills
In November 2024, the Sentinel Challenge was held at Raffles Institution. More than 340 students participated in the competition. They showcased their skills through various cyber security challenges. The event fostered the importance of teamwork and problem-solving skills among students.

Capstone Projects and Other Activities
Post-secondary students participate in various capstone projects, such as building a search engine and investigating a simulated bank breach. In addition, they participate in the CTF (Capture-the-Flag) challenge at the Cyber Defenders Discovery Camp, which prepares them to face real-life cyber threats.
Preparing for the Cyber Defence of the Future
The Sentinel Programme is training Singapore’s younger generation in cybersecurity and digital skills. Through this program, students are preparing to face real-life cyber threats and building a strong foundation for future cyber defense.
